No. In general, it’s important that all computer crime is reported. Even if no investigation follows, crime report intelligence can be built up and an accurate picture of the levels of computer crime can be produced.

If victims of a particular crime do not come forward to report incidents, then the number stated in crime reporting statistics will be not be a true reflection of the number of crimes taking place.

virus. How do I regain access to the USC network?
ITS disconnects infected computers from the network in order to maintain security for the university computing community. To re-establish a connection to the USC network, you will need to do the following:

Scan your computer using antivirus scanning software that has been updated with the latest virus definitions.
Be sure to remove or quarantine any viruses identified by the antivirus software.
Install necessary operating system patches to prevent your computer from being vulnerable to future attacks (i.e., Code Red worm).
Once you’ve ensured that your computer is virus free and secure, please contact the Customer Support Center at 213-740-5555 to re-establish your connection.

I recommend a free program called Avast, and also running something called malwarebytes regularly to make sure you haven’t downloaded and installed any malware. Also examine your Activity Monitor (OSX) to see if anything you don’t recognize is running.

First of all most of the antivirus program dont allow you to install itself if it finds some other antivirus program pre-installed on your system.
But even if they do allow you, it is a very bad idea to run  more than one antivirus software on a system. Here are the reasons :-

They will try to kill each other - As we know that antivirus software search for programs that are monitoring and sending information about your system. Monitoring and sending information is done by various programs like a keylogger, a trojan horse, RAT's, even an antivirus. So the competing antivirus program that monitors your system and send information about it looks like a threat to another one.
They will fight over viruses - when an antivirus program finds a virus, it removes it or quarantines it. But if a competing antivirus sees that quarantined file and wants to remove that quarantine it in accordance with its own objective then it will repeatedly send report about that file that it is detecting even though it is no longer a threat to your system.
They will consume huge memory - Now here comes your answer. Antivirus softwares consume a lot of your system's memory to conduct scans and other related operations. If you have two of these operating, your system's effectiveness can be highly diminished or completely wiped out altogether, and without any benefit, since the two are performing redundant operation.

When it comes to protecting your computer, more protection is not better. It is not a war that if you take more troops, you win.
Take some time to do some research and choose one comprehensive antivirus suite that would be good for your system.

A computer virus is a program or piece of code designed to damage your computer by corrupting system files, wasting resources, destroying data or otherwise being a nuisance.

Viruses are unique from other forms of malware in that they are self-replicating — capable of copying themselves across files or other computers without a user's consent.

Basically, they are really contagious.

The internet provides hackers and other internet surfers the opportunity to easily access other individual’s information and personal details. This makes the internet an unsafe and unsecure network. All internet users are advised to obtain professional antivirus software in order to combat the growing phenomenon of internet fraud and hacking.

Through investing in antivirus software individuals are able to safeguard any valuable and important information stored on their personal computers (PC). The most important factor for obtaining antivirus software is in order to protect your personal bank account details. When making online payment transactions, individuals often save their card details and other sensitive information onto their computer or even on the website. By doing this, individuals are automatically a potential victim of credit card fraud as well as identity theft.

Hackers are able to enter your computer system and access any details stored onto your hard drive. This is an even greater threat in the event that they hack into a corporate network and can access a company’s bank account details. Large multinational companies often spend a significant amount of money to secure their internal networks from malicious software as they store their clients’ confidential information in their company records. It is vital that all internet users invest in antivirus software to protect their personal and corporate details from malicious internet users.

How does an antivirus work?

Antivirus software will begin by checking your computer programs and comparing them to known types of malware. It will also scan your computer for behaviors that may signal the presence of a new, unknown malware. Typically, antivirus software uses all three scanning detection processes:

Specific Detection – This works by looking for known malware by a specific set of characteristics.
Generic Detection – This process looks for malware that are variants of known “families,” or malware related by a common codebase.
Heuristic Detection – This process scans for previously unknown viruses by looking for known suspicious behavior or file structures.
Although the detection tools are highly effective, no antivirus software is failsafe. If you suspect your device has been infected, you should take action to remedy the problem quickly.

Most viruses, Trojan horses, and worms are activated when you open an attachment or click a link contained in an email message. If your email client allows scripting, then it is possible to get a virus by simply opening a message. It's best to limit what HTML is available in your email messages. The safest way to view email messages is in plain text.

How to install an antivirus program on a computer.

To install an antivirus program on your computer, follow the steps below.

1. If you purchased the antivirus program from a retail store, insert the CD or DVD into the computer's disc drive. The installation process should start automatically, with a window opening to help guide you through the install process.
2. If you downloaded the antivirus program on the Internet, find the downloaded file on your computer. If the downloaded file is a zip file, unzip the file to extract and access the installation files. Look for a file named setup.exe, install.exe, or something similar, then double-click that file. The installation process should start, with a window opening to help guide you through the install process.
3. In the installation process window, follow the steps provided to install the antivirus program. The install process will provide recommended options so the antivirus program will function properly, which in most cases can be accepted as is. The one exception is if the install process recommends that you also install any toolbars for Internet browsers or other helpful programs for your computer. If prompted to install other software along with the antivirus program, uncheck all boxes or decline the install of those extra programs. No additional programs should be needed for the antivirus program to install and run successfully on your computer.
4. When the install process is complete, close out of the install window.
5. If used, remove the CD or DVD from the computer's disc drive.

You are likely thinking of a trojan horse, which usually appears embedded in a computer program that a user voluntarily downloads.

A trojan horse performs unauthorized functions without the knowledge of the user, but still allows the user to use that program or application. People are often surprised to find out they have a trojan, since the useful application itself may be functioning as expected and showing no indication as causing an issue.

Q.Follow the following steps:

Make sure that all Access Card numbers and AccèsD Affaires user codes used on the infected compute are immediately deactivated. To do this, contact your Caisse populaire or call 1-866-779-COOP (1-866-779-2667), Monday to Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Do not, under any circumstances, use the computer to make online transactions or purchases or to access sites containing confidential information about you as long as the virus has not been removed by a qualified expert.
Important: It is possible that your antivirus software may not detect the virus on your computer. This is why a manual search for the virus and extraction may be necessary.
You may get help from an expert by contacting:

The store where you purchased the computer (e.g. major electronic store have qualified technicians and offer problem resolution services).
The technical support service of the antivirus software installed on the computer.
Your Internet service provider, if it offers a virus protection program.
Any computer expert near you.

How do I protect my computer from a virus?

1. Keep your software up to date
Software makers like Microsoft and Oracle routinely update their software to fix bugs that could potentially be exploited by hackers. Oracle just released on Sunday an update to its Java software to fix a security hole hackers could have used to infect computers with malware.

The software patch came after the Department of Homeland Security sent out an advisory late last week about the security flaw recommending computer users disable the Java plug-in in their Web browsers.

2. Don’t click on links within emails
A good rule of thumb is if you don’t recognize a sender of an email, don’t click on any links within it. Microsoft says 44.8 percent of Windows virus infections happen because the computer user clicked on something.

3. Use free antivirus software
You don’t have to pay for software to protect your computer or for an annual subscription to maintain the latest virus protection. For Windows users, Microsoft Security Essentials is free. Avast is another free anti-virus program.

See our story Antivirus Software is a Waste of Money for more ideas.

4. Back up your computer
Do you regularly back up the information on your computer? If you don’t – and 29 percent of computer users fall into that category – you have no protection from calamites ranging from hard drive failure to your house burning down. If you value your data, back it up.

You have three basic backup options: an external hard drive, online backup service, or cloud storage. Use a service like Google Drive, and your files will be continually backed up to the cloud. And the price is right: free for up to 5 GB of data. For more, see Online Storage Wars: Which Virtual Storage Is Best?

5. Use a strong password
A strong password is one that is complex, with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. While some people use the same password for everything, try to avoid that practice.

Password security company SplashData.com says the three most common passwords are password, 123456, and 12345678. The company recommends avoiding using the same user name/password combination for multiple online site logins.

When creating a password, use eight characters or more and, to make them easier to remember, try using short phrases separated by spaces or underscore marks – such as “car_park_city?”

Best idea? Use a free service like LastPass to create and manage your passwords. You only have to remember one password: the one that opens your LastPass vault. Once you’ve opened it, LastPass will automatically log you in to every site you visit requiring a password. It’s really handy – check it out.

6. Use a firewall
Just because you have antivirus software running doesn’t mean you have a firewall. Both PCs and Macs come with built-in firewall software. Be sure to check that it’s enabled.

7. Minimize downloads
Make sure your Web browser’s security settings are high enough to detect unauthorized downloads. For Internet Explorer, the medium security setting is the minimum level to use.

8. Use a pop-up blocker
Web browsers have the ability to stop pop-up windows and allow you to set the security for accepting pop-ups. The federal OnGuardOnline site recommends never clicking on links within pop-up screens.

Even the most vigilant of computer users still run the risk of picking up malware. You should suspect a computer virus if your machine slows down, crashes, or repeats error messages.

Other clues include the computer failing to promptly shut down or restart, new toolbars you didn’t install, a changing home page, or a laptop battery draining faster than it should.

If you suspect your computer is infected, make sure your security software is updated, then scan the computer. If that doesn’t solve the problem, try typing a question into your favorite search engine to uncover forums where others might describe fighting and winning similar battles.

Bottom line? These days protecting yourself from viruses and lost data is much easier than it used to be and doesn’t have to cost a dime. Take a few minutes today to make sure you’re protected. You’ll be glad you did.
