When choosing a PSU, base it on brand and efficiency. It tests all sorts of PSUs at standard testing conditions (the ones that gave them the ratings) and then "real-life" scenarios (ala sticking it in an oven at 45 C). The brand names perform and the bargain buys do not. A bargain PSU is good for, say, office computers. A gaming computer needs something more powerful.

Actually, most PSU's nowadays are either 20 or 24-pin, with newer motherboards and PSU's requiring 24-pin. Some PSUs are compatible with either 20 or 24-pin via a notch that allows you to remove the last 4 pins. Also, there's a 4-pin 12v connector required for almost all modern consumer boards, though this comes standard is most likely all PSUs nowadays. There are also EPS connectors, which are basically two of those 4-pin 12v connectors put together. Some units may have this as a single piece, which would mean you can't use it on a regular board, but others have both the 8-pin and an extra 4-pin connector.

A simple way to think of a linear regulator is to think of it as an active series resistor. It will vary its effective resistance so that the output voltage remains the same. The upside to such a design is that it is cheap, simple to implement, and provides a relatively clean output. The downside is that the regulator dissipates a relatively large amount of power.

Most linear voltage regulator chips work with just themselves, an input capacitor and an output capacitor. While you should follow the recommendations in the datasheet, the value you pick for these caps usually isn’t all that critical. The most common linear regulator is the LM7805. This design has been around for many years and is typically found in a TO-220 package.

Hi, Lyka! To answer your question, the fact that the static charge build up in your own body jumping to ground since the power supply, and the computer chassis is always grounded, and electric charge stored in any capacity will always use the path of least resistance to reach ground.

So to you what seems like the power supply giving you an electric shock is in fact the charge in your body dissipating to ground.

Hello Ryan Joshua! The fuse you referring to is usually to prevent fire - that's the basic protection a fuse offers - between power supply and appliance there may be a few feet or meters of cable.

Some power supplies come with their own integrated fuse. The fuse is designed to protect the circuits in the power supply from damage should an over-current situation arise. You can read more about fuses on this PC Fundamentals page about basic electrical components.

Yes James!  Programmable Power Supply includes a processor, voltage and current programming circuitry, a current shunt, and a readback circuit for voltage and current. Additionally, a programmable power supply may include overvoltage , overcurrent, and short circuit protection as well as temperature compensation.

Programmable Power supplies are found in many applications including automated equipment testing and intelligent debugging.

Any questions or any idea you want to share regarding or Programmable Power Supply? Quote this message and reply, James!

Honestly it's pretty risky to physically open it. Plus you'd void any warranties. But if it is need to be clean, you should do this steps:

Step 1: Shut down and unplug your computer. Never clean the inside of your PC while it is running or plugged in.\

Step 2: Unscrew and remove your computer's access panel.

Step 3: Find the power supply by looking for the place that your computer's power cable goes into.

Step 4: Use a 12-oz. can of compressed air with a nozzle to blow dust and dirt off the power supply. Hold the nozzle about 2 inches from the surface you're cleaning and always blow from the inside of the PC outward. Blow the air through the natural holes and air channels of the power supply's fan, shooting dust out of the PC. Dust for about 1 to 2 minute, using short bursts of air.

Step 5: Let the dust settle, and then shoot air through the power supply again to see if more dust comes out.

Step 6: Place the access panel back on your computer and screw it back in.

You can test a power supply yourself manually using a multimeter you can purchase a power supply tester to perform an automatic PSU test.

Both methods are equally effective ways of testing a power supply so which one you choose is completely up to you.
